Half of all DVT is asymptotic i.e. the person will have no apparent signs and symptoms of a disease. In many cases DVT is not diagnoses unless it strikes in the form of pulmonary embolism. The major symptoms of DVT include:-
1. Leg swelling or pain.
2. the skin is increasingly tender or warm to touch
3. Red\Violet discoloration of the affected area
Pulmonary Embolism
The symptoms for PE include:-
1. Chest pain
2. Shortness of breath
3. Tachycardia
4. Blood in the cough
5. Dizziness

What is DVT and PE
Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep Vein Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot often referred to as Thrombus in the deep vein of a leg. It may be asymptotic or may be associated with redness, swelling, inflammation and pain of the leg.
DVT is usually the result of prolonged period of inactivity caused by long travels in the airplanes or cars, or after recent surgery or hospitalization. People with certain genetic conditions are more pre disposed to clotting. It can also be a result of Pregnancy, cancer, obesity, smoking, birth control and other hormone replacement therapies.
It’s a serious condition because the blood clot formed in the leg can break and travel to lungs causing what is know as Pulmonary Embolism and can be potentially fatal
Pulmonary Embolism
Pulmonary Embolism is a potentially life threatening condition in which a blood clot formed in the veins of a leg can travel to lungs obstructing the blood flow and causing pressure on the right ventricle of the heart causing chest pain, tachycardia, shortness of breath and even death
The treatment is usually in the form of anticoagulant therapy with a combination of heparin, low molecular weight heparin and Coumadin. For people with a contraindication to anticoagulants or those at high risk for bleeding, a device known as Inferior Vena Cava Filter (IVC) Filter may be placed to prevent blood clots from travelling to the lungs.

Welcome to Embolism Info
If you are on Coumadin, means you are the survivor of a potentially life threatening disease. Coumadin, from its advancements from years ago, has served as a wonder drug saving many lives but at the same time, needs to be carefully monitored for adverse reaction from its use. The resources on Coumadin and clotting disorders are few and far in between. So here is the blog dedicated to all patients of blood clotting disorders.
It will contain information about Deep vein thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism, Coumadin, Lovonex and Heparin:-the drugs commonly use to treat these disorders and the do’s and don’t’s on these drugs.
